The Superfluous Review

Space… the final frontier. Not exactly the case in indie games, and neither is a sidescrolling procedurally generated roguelike with pixel art, blah blah blah. However, the superfluous injects this genre with a large amount of creativity and charm.

The first seconds, well… minutes of the game consist of text telling you the situation: You are going to an asteroid, to destroy said asteroid before it destroys the Earth in the near future of 999 years from now. This is when one of the game’s main themes makes its first appearance, humor is in every spurt of dialogue, in sections of the gameplay, and in the way the United World Hegemony’s staff emails you...

Meadow Review

I typically enjoy perusing the new releases of Indie games on Steam, as you never know what you are going to find. I am always on the lookout for promising and affordable concepts, and I definetly found that in Meadow.

The Jist

Meadow is an environmental explorative MMO. Yes, I did say MMO. The game throws you as an animal into a vast world with almost no explanation, and you will work together with others to collect various forms of “essence”, unlocking emotes, skins, and completely new animals.

Silence

A lot of games explain too much and don’t let you discover anything on your own. This isn’t always a bad decision but can be a fatal mistake for combat free games. The exploration is accentuated by a lack of communication to your fellow players, this has pros and cons...

Shell Shock LIVE: The logical conclusion to the classic artillery game.

Artillery games have been around a while. Many were distributed as demos with PC related magazines or even as full source code within the magazine itself. Later when the dial up Bulletin Board  Services and Internet came along we had the luxury of downloading a copy to disk and sharing it with friends. Friends we’d often lose (at least until lunch) when ever we splattered them accross a colorful pixelated landscape. These games made it to the computer labs and offices of many a school and were among the most successful time wasters for students and faculty. Flash games made a splash to such a degree many sites still host these games and use various HTML5 tricks to make them run. WebGL does a great job too in most respects...

FRAMED Review – Noir brought to IOS

I spent my afternoon perusing through the indie game section of the IOS store, expecting to see a billion stupid word puzzles and match three games, there was one thing that caught my eye, and that thing was a free game called “Framed”.

Gameplay

Framed is a puzzle game in which you are some sort of agent that is escaping from the police with some sort of briefcase. Each level is organized into little cartoon / comic style panels you rearrange them in order to avoid; or in some cases, take out the officers to escape. The premise is hard to convey, and you really have to play it to discover what it is all about. Different panels do different things when in a certain order, and all of them are set up so that they interact differently in a different order...

All of the Indie Games at E3

During this year, we saw a lot of indie games, and I am going to describe all of the ones shown off. These all look pretty cool, and most will be coming to PC, which is awesome.

Microsoft

Microsoft’s conference killed it on the Indie Game front, showing indie title after indie title, each brings fantastic, unique projects. Everything from 3d FPS’s to 2d exploration games was shown, and I can’t wait to see the finished product of each of these.

-Deep Rock Galactic (Ghost Ship Games)

Microsoft gave us a look at the Co-op FPS indie game Deep Rock Galactic developed by Ghost Ship Games and published by Coffee Stain Publishing. The game depicts a team of dwarves mining a variety of resources and defending themselves on an alien planet...
